The year 2020 presented many issues – with the continuation of police brutality, corrupt politicians, and an ongoing global pandemic. Many were laid off or forced to work from home to help combat the pandemic at hand through social distancing. This created an opportunity to design a set of products that achieve some sense of peace and hope in the wake of uncertain times. Elevate is a table, lamp, and chair set that brings harmony and a sense of elevation through its design.
Elevate's design was inspired by the De Stijl movement of the early 1900’s. Originating in the Netherland, this movement’s founding contributors: Theo Van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian, Bart van der Leck, and Vilmos Huszár, believed in the complete rejection of reality and to strip reality of its impurities. De Stijl was an abstraction of nature to its most basic and essential forms and colours, to most accurately represent the true essence of reality. These essential forms and colours were the basic minimum: the straight line, the right angle, the horizontal and the vertical, the three primary colours (red, yellow, and blue) and the three equally primary non-colours (black, grey and white). This suppression of individualism was to achieve something more sublime, more universal, and pure – to achieve spiritual harmony.
